Why You Should Feed Your Baby Olive Oil

There is no denying it. Olive oil is a wonderful fat to give to babies.

Probably the most widely-used oil in cooking, olive oil is from the fruit of the olive tree which is a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean region.

In Italy, doctors strongly recommend using olive oil in solids for babies that are being weaned off breast milk (Olive Oil Times, 2015). Experts have found that olive oil consumption is associated with lowered risk of major health challenges such as cancers, heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes. This oil is packed with omega 3 and omega 6 in similar portions to breast milk fat, as well as being rich in monounsaturated fatty acids.

Thanks to all these nutrients, olive oil can offer some potential health perks to babies.

Preventing constipation

Curing cradle cap

Reducing diaper rash

Soothing baby’s cough

Nutrition for premature babies

Healthy diet

It is almost universally accepted that the Mediterranean diet has impressive health benefits we all need – and olive oil is at the cornerstone. Among the most recent research, Francesco Sofi from University of Florence and Careggi University Hospital, examined the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet:

Results showed that MedDiet had an impact on chronic diseases and overall mortality

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a nutritional pyramid that Piccolo stands by, consisting mainly of olive oil, whole grains, fresh or dried fruit and vegetables, a moderate amount of fish, dairy and meat, and lots of fresh and dried herbs and spices. As an olive oil lover, Piccolo’s recipes contain an organic, buttery olive oil that is harvested later in the season for full nutritional benefit. So next time, think about adding a little bit of olive oil when making your baby’s stews or soups – your baby can gain a great source of fat in their diet from an early age!
