Is My Baby Getting Enough Sleep?

To nap or not to nap?

Sometimes they’re up every hour, sometimes they sleep through. Navigating sleep time can be a complete minefield as a parent. That’s why we’ve teamed up with sleep experts at Owlet to provide a guideline for sleep recommendations by age.

Newborn 0-3 months

Newborn babies need about 11-17 hours of sleep a day and need to wake every 3-4 hours to feed. Top tip: respond to night wakings with little energy so they don’t get overly excited to see you

Younger Infant 4-7 months

Infants at this age should be getting 3-3.5 hours of sleep in the day and 11-12 hours sleep at night and can be waking for 1-2 feedings.

Older Infant 8-12 months

Your infant can continue sleeping 14-15 hours total but may take 2 shorter naps in the day.

Toddler 1-2 years

Happy 1 year! Toddlers should be sleeping 11-12 hours at night and getting 1-3.5 hours of daytime sleep over 1-2 naps.

Children 3-5 years

Welcome to the school years! As your little one starts their learning journey naps may not be possible, so try pull bedtime earlier with 11-12 hours of night time sleep.

Parent Sleep (yes your sleep is important too!)

On average adults need 7-9 hours of sleep so try and set strict sleeping and waking times around your little one’s needs. Top tip: A 10-20 minute nap in the day can help you feel more rested than a lie in!

As with everything parenting, these numbers are just a guide and your families needs are unique so do what feels best for you and your kids.
