How do I prepare a bottle of Piccolo milk?

Let’s get serious for a moment. This is one of those times where you have to follow the instructions step-by-step. Like all formula, Piccolo milk is made under strict hygienic conditions,  however, opening and prepping it by the book is important (and pretty easy to do once you know how).

STEP 1

Wash your hands really well. Then wash all the bits and pieces you’ll be using, as per their respective instructions. Make sure your surface area is clean too. We don’t want anything contaminating your baby’s food.

STEP 2

Boil 1 litre of fresh water. Don’t use artificially softened water and don’t boil it more than once. Allow the boiled water to cool for 30 minutes, no more, no less. Measure out the amount of water you need into the sterilised bottle. Our feeding guide breaks down all the requirements by age and weight so don’t stress and keep referring back to it.

STEP 3

Using the scoop we’ve provided (to keep things simple and accurate), measure out the correct amount of powder (refer to our handy feeding guide). Level off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife before dropping the powder into the water. Pop the scoop back into place in your Piccolo milk container.

STEP 4

Put the sterilised teat & cap back onto your bottle and give the bottle a good shake until the powder is completely dissolved.

STEP 5

Cool your bottle under the tap water. Make sure the bottle cap is still on at this point, taking care not to get the teat wet; otherwise this will undo all your sterilising work. Remember, you’re aiming for lukewarm: not too hot, not too cold. Always test the temperature by shaking a few drops on the inside of your wrist. Feed your hungry baby immediately.

Some Important Notes

  • Only make up Piccolo milk as and when you need it. Any leftover? You’ll need to discard this or make sure it’s used up within two hours.
  • Never add extra powder or water to make feeds stronger or weaker, and don’t press too much into the scoop.
  • Don’t heat up baby milk in a microwave, as hotspots could occur in the milk and scald your baby’s little mouth.

Important Notice:

  • Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. It is important that, in preparation for and during breastfeeding, you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breast milk, and reversing the decision not to breastfeed is difficult. The social and financial implications of using an infant milk should be considered. Improper use of an infant milk or inappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. If you use an infant milk, you should follow manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully – failure to follow the instructions may make your baby ill.
  • Follow on milk is only suitable for babies over 6 months, as part of a mixed diet and should not be used as a breastmilk substitute before 6 months. We advise that all formula milks be used on the advice of a doctor, midwife, health visitor, public health nurse, dietitian, pharmacist or other professional responsible for maternal and child care, based on your baby’s individual needs.
  • Use Growing Up milk as part of a varied balanced diet from 12th month.
