3 ideas to occupy your toddler that aren’t TV

If you’ve ever tried to interrupt an episode of In The Night Garden, you’ll have felt the true wrath of a tired toddler. TV is captivating, we get it – especially in the unfamiliar world that we currently find ourselves in. We’re hooked on screens all day and, while our world more likely revolves around Instagram, your kid hasn’t caught up yet and telly is pretty much the best thing to ever happen. Yet, up until 5 years, they shouldn’t be spending more than an hour a day glued to the screen. So, here are a couple of things to amuse them until then… (joke).

It’s time to step up

You’re the most amusing thing your child has ever seen. Not funny-looking, just funny. Tickle them, chase them, get on your hands and knees, crawling about after them, it’ll make even the sulkiest child crack a smile. Then, think about how much they’ve learnt so far — how much of it has been through interacting with you? Quite a lot of it, that’s how much. If you’re keen for them to nap, lie down and let them climb all over you; that’s pretty knackering. You might catch some zzz’s too. Don’t say we never think of you.

Plain old water

Water play doesn’t have to stop at bath-time. It’s absolutely fascinating how many hours of fun can be had with some water. A plastic bowl full of water and a few squirty toys or bottles is a good indoor fun option but don’t forget towels, lots of towels. Bored of washing the dishes? Let them pitch in on a stool up to the sink. It’s funny how in years’ time, this is the chore they will really hate. Finally, if it’s pouring it down: rain macs at the ready for singin’ in the rain.

Get some air

Yeah, okay, you’re probably tired of hearing this one. But don’t forget that everywhere is utterly fascinating for a toddler. Maybe you usually love taking your little one to new & exciting places, but now, with only a pair of toddler reins to slow them down, the experience will be completely different again. If there’s a local park near where you live, or if you’re lucky enough to live by the sea, take your little ones out to play in the open air – it will tire them out faster than you think… did somebody say ‘Nap Time’?
