Cat founded Piccolo from her kitchen table when pregnant with her daughter, and it is her passion, love and understanding of good food and good business that is at the heart of what we are trying to build.
The story really began when Cat was 12, helping in her family’s grocery store in the mountains of Italy. It was there that she began to understand how important the core principles of nutrition, flavour, family and community were; and it is these principles that Piccolo is founded on.
From the age of 21, Cat has worked in food – starting with the United Nations food agencies in Rome where she created campaigns and programmes promoting sustainable livelihoods for farmers. These initiatives linking the pleasure of food with a commitment to the community inspired Cat’s ethos behind building a baby food brand.
Steeped in Mediterranean values around healthy living, quality ingredients, and supporting communities, our team is passionate that babies should experience new flavours during their weaning journey – we are on a mission to encourage a life-time of healthy eating from first tastes!
But at the heart of what we do, is what we give back. We are committed to giving 10% of our profits to help fund food education, this is in part centred around our partnership with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) the UK’s largest parents’ charity. We were pretty excited to be the first baby food brand to sign an exclusive partnership with the NCT.
Cat and our nutritional therapist Alice Fotheringham, also run Piccolo’s sister charity, The Food Education Foundation, this is a brilliant programme that trains volunteers and teaches parents about food and nutrition in the first 1,000 days through workshops across London, in particular, working with disadvantaged families and helping them jumpstart their little ones healthy beginning.
Having ethics at our core and striving to be a company that we are proud of, is why there was cake all round when we found out we were recognised as one of the most caring companies in Britain!
