What to do after those first tastes?

After offering those first tastes, keep feeding your baby with a wide variety of flavours early on, because this is when your curious little foodie explorer is more willing to try new foods. And that's what weaning is all about. It's an opportunity to introduce your baby to a range of tastes and textures while they're still getting the majority of their nutrients from their breast or formula milk during their first year. Because milk still forms an important part of your baby's diet at this stage, you don't need to worry about the quality of food they're eating or specific nutrients. Just focus on variety and enjoying exploring new (and favourite) flavours with your little one!

Many of our lifelong eating behaviours develop during the first years of life. This is especially true of
learning which food tastes and textures we like and how much we eat.
Children determine what they like and dislike based on how familiar a food is and there is actually a
direct link between the frequency with which you offer a food and what your child likes to eat. Repeated
exposure in the first few years is important, as it can take up to 12 times for a new food to be accepted.

If you have started your baby off on purées, your baby will be able to tolerate (and hopefully, enjoy!)
mashed and finger foods from quite early on. Weaning is a gradual, gentle process of exploring a wide
variety of flavours and textures, so think about moving onto different vegetables, grains, pulses, meat
and fish fairly soon after those first simple vegetable and fruit purées.

Introducing lumps is a gradual process. You can either go straight onto finger food (chunks of soft,
cooked vegetables, for example), or start with small, soft overall lumps (think mashing with a fork rather
than blending). Chewing is a big milestone, so don’t expect it to happen right away! Just keep trying and
experimenting.
