The Piccolo Oats

sourcing location

Oats were once considered a secondary plant or weed, but that’s not what we think. Oats grow in temperate countries and like cool wet summers, making them perfect for the northern hemisphere – especially Scotland and Germany. One of our co-founders, Alice, grew up surrounded by the oat fields in Fife, which is why you will find they often crop up in many of our recipes!

  • FROM THE KITCHEN

From oat fingers and porridge at breakfast to crumble toppings, savoury flapjacks and face masks, oats are incredible versatile and a store cupboard basic in the Piccolo house.

  • NUTRITIONAL NUGGET

Oats are a fantastic food, with a wide range of known health benefits, such as supporting the immune system and digestion, as well as reducing the risk of obesity and diabetes. They are a complex carbohydrate that are full of a specific type of fibre known as beta-glucan, which is known to help lower levels of bad cholesterol.

    FACT

Tied in a muslin bag, oat straw was used to soften bath water, and this process is still used in baths today to soothe itchy skin and eczema.
